The top two tea bowls were removed from the kiln at very high temperatures and quickly cooled rendering a shiny dark glaze effect that is a result of the fly ash melting on the surface of the clay. The Shino glaze tea bowls were fired in saggars (clay boxes) in the back chamber at a cooler temperature protected from the fly ash but exposed to the reduction atmosphere of wood combustion to develop color.
