I love making tea bowls, they are a technical challenge as well as a meditation for me. The winter bowls begin with a "tea bowl blank" (a rough shape that is either thrown on the wheel, coiled, pinched or slab constructed) then carved, in a rhythmic, meticulous sequence. When I carve a bowl I work within the volumetric parameters of tea ceremony ware, and seek an intimate expression and balance within the constraints of the form. Tea bowls are as much about feel as they are about aesthetics. They are meant to be filled, to be held, and to evoke from the user a moment of contemplation.
